Introduction Approaches and treatment options for TMJ disorders, jaw and teeth pain
Between 5 and 12 % of the population have temporomandibular joint and muscle disorder (TMJD).
We all as bodyworkers have heard of some of our clients mention something about their jaws or chronic neck pain, besides the most obvious effects of the orthodontic treatments, clenching, chronic migraines, referred pain in the head and neck, chewing and opening problems. There are so many factors involved in this particular area of the body that it cannot be explained categorically. Trigger point therapy plays “press and pray” wilst other therapies barely scratch the surface.
By the time the TMJD is present, trigger points are active, there is a stressful environment, lack or too much movement, depletion or exertion.
Structural origin? Stress? Tight muscles? Joint out of place? Local vs Global?
Pretentious or lucky we would be if we fixed such a complex issue in 1 session without addressing first what triggers it and then the origin, giving the person a sense of integration of their jaws in their body. The possibility to seek a collaboration with other therapists is crucial to give the client/patient who suffers a holistic approach.
This short introduction presents a picture of Albert’s findings, insights and clinical experience. A follow-up workshop can be organised, if enough participants are interested.
